The topic of the discussion group was quotations, and one silver-haired woman offered “‘Give me liberty or give me death’ by Nathan Hale.” I am a member of this group, which is sponsored by our town’s senior center. At 76 years of age, I am the youngest, and serve as a fact checker. From my cellphone, I read from the Wikipedia entry on Nathan Hale and tell the group that the quote associated with him is ‘I only regret, that I have but one life to lose for my country.’ As an added tidbit, I read a description of Hale’s physical appearance, written by a fellow soldier: “Hale had blue eyes, flaxen blond hair, darker eyebrows, and stood slightly taller than average, with mental powers of a sedate mind and piousness.” To which the woman added, “And he was hung.”
